The north side of my house gets abundant sunlight in summer and to be useful as an "outdoor kitchen" area, I felt it necessary to not only provide some shade but to define the area as well. This is the view from inside the kitchen.
Starting from the end of the fence extension, the first post wil be attached to the block wall.
First posts attached temporarily. My friend Christopher Grandel did all the work on this project.
Next step is to cut the hose rafters back to accept the fascia board.
Christopher needed to relocate the cable and phone lines.
Fascia installed. Determining the correct angle for the rafters to be trimmed.
Rafters installed and painted.
Starting the installation of the 2x2s.
These last two shots show the rafters with their slots resting on scraps of wood. The dowels give the rafters free reign of any motion the arbor may incur in case of an earthquake. I didn't want the house connected to the fence by any mechanical means.
